Studying Architecture Photography: Where Geometry Meets Artistryas a photographer is simply fascinating. Architecture Photography: Where Geometry Meets Artistry employs every element of the photographer’s search for compositional perfection: leading lines, rule of thirds, shapes, colors, symmetry, light, shadows, juxtaposition. One can get lost for hours exploring the beauty and functional sculpture of architectural design. As the eye of the photographer examines the mystics of the architect’s creation, it is mesmerized by the marvels before it. Few artistic endeavors can match the majesty of an architect’s finished canvas.
Photographing Architecture Photography: Where Geometry Meets Artistry is almost effortless. The subject is laid before you in perfect state. The only challenges are to capture optimal light, find just the right angle, and to choose what, if any, other secondary elements to intrude into the scene, e.g. people. Adding people brings life to the photo. But sans people, there is more serenity and reverence.

Doors and windows are favorites of mine to photograph. Having traveled to many countries outside the US, I have found literally hundreds of amazing exterior doors and windows that are so much more than simply openings to the outdoors. Many are worn and weathered, giving an antique quality to the structures. I have found doors that are framed in rock or concrete blocks making the simple door a piece of art. And I have captured windows ornately carved out of stone walls that were breathtaking to behold.
I have witnessed (and photographed) famous structures such as the Roman Colosseum as well as less famous, but equally amazing examples of architectural beauty, many churches and abbeys in France, Spain, Italy and Sicily. Nowhere will you find more enchanting and awe-inspiring examples of architectural excellence than in places of worship in these countries. But great examples of the works of amazing architects can be found in the US as well. One must simply go about exploring the skylines of any American city and you will find them.
